Self Assessment apps: Accounting made simple

Self Assessment apps: Accounting made simple

If you’re Self Employed, and have yet to submit your Self Assessment, fear not; there’s help at hand.

With various Tax software options available to us at the click of a button, why not take advantage of a mobile app to manage your books this year?

If you’re on a budget and don’t want to fork-out for an accountant to file your tax returns, have you considered using an app to assist you?

If the answer’s “no”, and the prospect of filing your tax return gives you the heebie-jeebies, why not try out an app to make your life easier?

So, assuming you’re familiar with mobile devices, apps and how to download them, there’s an app that may help you with your accounting.

Whether you’re looking for something to help you keep a good record of your accounts, or would like something more comprehensive, choosing the right app could save your business time and money.

If numbers aren’t your thing, and you’d like to integrate billing and invoicing into your return, here’s a few applications that may make accounting and filing your return easier.

Sage Business Cloud Accounting App

Aside from Sage Business Cloud Accounting being a favoured platform in the UK, it works seamlessly with HMRC’s Making Tax Digital campaign for businesses large and small.

Sole traders can take advantage of Sage’s Start accounting package, or small businesses may want to consider Sage’s Standard or Plus packages which are tailored around small business accounting and returns.

QuickBooks Accounting App

Don’t be put off by the slightly more difficult to grasp QuickBooks. With new features including a built-in income tax estimator and a new month-end tool designed for accountants in the industry, this app has everything you need to keep your QuickBooks Self Assessment simple.

Aligned with the government’s Making Tax Digital strategy, QuickBooks offers a basic Start, an intermediate Essential, an advanced Plus packages or even a Self-Employed option for Sole Traders.

One of our favourite features about QuickBooks is that it has over 700 add-ons to plug and play to get the most from your virtual accountant.

Nomisma Accounting App

Nomisma does the basics well, but isn’t as comprehensive as the others mentioned in the post. That said, if an overwhelming amount of features (nor accounting) just isn’t your thing, then Nomisma may just be!

Track your invoices, orders, bills and contracts all in one easy-to-manage place.

Like Sage and QuickBooks, Nomisma is fully HMRC compliant, lets you submit your tax return directly from the app without leaving Nomisma. and even auto-populates fields from information you have entered previously. Neat!

GoSimple Tax Accounting App

GoSimple does just that. Unlike the other accountancy apps featured in this post, GoSimple doesnlt have a feature to publish your return, but instead helps keep you books in order.

Everything plays nicely with HMRC, with the app letting you scan your receipts. Nice work!

If a no nonsense approach to submitting your return is what you;re looking for, then this jargon-free is refreshingly easy to use.

FreshBooks

FreshBooks, like Nomisma, is a jargon-free way to do accounting. No need to have a degree in accounting to understand the ins-and-outs of FreshBooks!

With a clean, modern interface, this accounting app (in our opinion) performs just as well as any of the apps featured. Like the others FreshBooks supports Making Tax Digital compliant.

Although FreshBooks is jargon-free, selecting a package can be difficult as there are many to choose from. Packages can be upgraded depending on your current requirements.

Self Assessment Deadline

All Self Employed / Sole Traders are required to publish their Self Assessment in order to complete their tax return before midnight on the 31st January 2021.

Feel free to contact us or post in the comments section below if you have any questions regarding which accountancy apps may be beneficial to your business.
